Types of data storage

USB

The USB storage device is a relatively cheap option for storing your photos/data. Shopping around it is possible to purchase a 128GB USB device for £29.99. The devices are generally small enough to be attached to a keychain and thus easily portable. They will also connect to any device with a USB port meaning you can take your data with you anywhere and access it on any computer or laptop. The security of these devices however isn’t the best. Should you lose your device anyone who finds it could access your files quite easily. Your average USB isn’t going to be all that durable either and can easily be broken if not taken care of properly.

CD/DVD

The CD/DVD is another cheap option for storage with a pack of 50 DVD+R discs been available to purchase for around £8. They are easily portable but if you don’t have your own external drive there’s no guarantee you will be able to access your data on the go. The discs aren’t very durable either, with a short life-span meaning you may lose your data quite easily if they’re aren’t looked after properly and you don’t create back-ups. The security of the discs is not the best either, anyone with access to the disc can access your data and they are not the fastest way of accessing your data either, it takes time to both read and write data from and to a disc.

External Hard-drive -

The external HD is probably one of the more expensive options for data storage but it’s still possible to purchase a 1TB for under £50. There are both desktop and portable versions, with the desktop versions been faster, available meaning you can take your work with you quite easily though neither option is something you can put in your pocket. Due to the storage size it’s possible to store and back-up large quantities of data. These devices aren’t the most durable though and like many electronic devices they won’t survive been dropped so 1000s of photos could potentially be lost.

SSD -

The SSD is a lot like a regular hard drive only they rely on conductors and electronics for data storage meaning they are generally more reliable than a regular HD and faster too. They are one of the more expensive for data storage with a 120GB costing around £42 online. Due to the small size the device is easily portable

Cloud Storage -

With services like Google drive and Dropbox it is possible to store our data online and we can then access it on any computer or device with an internet connection. This means it’s next to impossible for the data to go missing or be stolen though these types of service aren’t completely secure with there been cases in the past where data has been accessed by online hackers. These services often require a monthly or yearly subscription too so the cost generally a lot more than the likes of a USB or SDD though unlike those options there’s less chance of you losing your data.
